Un segundo favorito se formalizó la noche del domingo, 21 de enero con la victoria del drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri en los SAG Awards, premios otorgados por el Gremio de Actores de Hollywood.
La cinta del director y guionista británico, Martin McDonagh, también se llevó el Globo de Oro de Mejor Película -Drama recientemente y se perfila como la competencia de The Shape of Water. El filme del mexicano Guillermo del Toro se ha alzado con el galardón principal en los Critics’ Choice Awards y el Gremio de Productores, así como los premios de Mejor Director en ambos, los Globos de Oro y los premios del BFCA. Cabe destacar que la película no estuvo nominada en la categoría principal de estos premios.
Desde sus orígenes, los premios del Gremio de Actores ha ayudado en la predicción de los resultados de los Premios Oscar, siendo los actores el mayor grupo que compone la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas. En años, recientes, sin embargo, este no ha sido necesariamente el caso. Por ejemplo, Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) ganó el Oscar de Mejor Actor el mismo año en que el Gremio de Actores eligió a Denzel Washington por Fences. Ese mismo año, el elenco del drama Hidden Figures se llevó el galardón principal de la noche, pero fue Moonlight la que se alzó con el Oscar de Mejor Película en un confuso momento en el que por unos minutos, el mundo pensó que había sido La La Land.
En las categorías individuales, todo transcurrió sin sorpresas mayores. Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney, Gary Oldman y Frances McDormand añadieron a su racha de victorias en sus respectivas categorías, dejando muy poco espacio para sorpresas en La Gran Noche del Cine el 4 de marzo.
